Third-Party Liability (TPL) protection is not insurance. The purchase of TPL is optional and not required to rent a vehicle. If TPL is purchased, the rental company contractually waives the responsibility for the cost of damage to third-party vehicles or injuries to third parties during the rental period, up to the policy limits, unless the coverage is invalidated as provided in the rental agreement. TPL does not provide protection related to damages to the rental vehicle or injuries to the driver of the rental vehicle.
If accepted, TPL provides the renter and authorised drivers with up to 1,000,000 USD (liability to third parties resulting in death or bodily injury) in respect of any one person arising out of any one accident, or up to 5,000,000 USD (for liability to third parties resulting in death or bodily injury) in respect of any number of persons in respect of any one claim or series of claims arising out of any one accident, and up to 250,000 USD (liability to third parties' property damage) in respect of any one claim or series of claims arising out of any one accident.
Please be aware that most car insurance policies from outside the Cayman Islands do not provide coverage in the Cayman Islands. Employees of the local rental car company are not qualified to evaluate the adequacy of the customer's personal liability insurance coverage, insurance purchased on third-party websites and credit card coverage. The renter should contact their insurance company before arrival with any questions regarding their specific coverage.
If the renter declines TPL, the renter is financially responsible for the cost of damage to third-party vehicles or injuries to third parties during the rental period.
