Third-Party Liability (TPL) protection is not insurance. The purchase of TPL is optional and not required to rent a vehicle. If you purchase TPL, the rental company contractually waives your responsibility for the cost of damage to third-party vehicles or injuries to third parties during the rental period, up to the policy limits, unless you invalidate the coverage as provided in the rental agreement. TPL does not provide protection related to damages to the rented vehicle or injuries to the driver of the rented vehicle. Tyre and Windshield Protection (TPL) is included in the National Protection Package (NPP).
TPL includes coverage for bodily injury and property damage of an amount equal to the minimum financial responsibility limits applicable to the vehicle and additional coverage, through an excess liability policy, with limits for the difference between the statutory minimum underlying limits and $20,000 per accident. No excess applies.
Please be aware that most vehicle insurance policies from outside the U.S. Virgin Islands do not provide coverage in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Employees of the local rental car company are not qualified to evaluate the adequacy of the customer's personal liability insurance coverage, insurance purchased from third-party websites and credit card coverage. The renter should contact their insurance company prior to arrival with any questions regarding their specific coverage. Further, if the renter declines both TPL and NPP, the renter is financially responsible for the cost of damage to third-party vehicles or injuries to third parties during the rental period.
